Brilliant thought. Gracious poem.
Yes she's here but the world does not notice.
She keeps coming still for
she is (ma)eternal.

No doubt his/her mother mary was really a bloke and the 12 disciples members of the local girls netball team? In all honesty it doesn't really matter what sex you believe he/she/it to be. It's all just make believe.

the only word i can use to describe this is baloney, when it comes to religion they are living in Axioms instead of seeing the real picture, so the individuals perceptions will be what ever they like in their comfort blanket, after all humankind create their gods in the image of themselves, again the Humanist or Satanist is required here

There's a decent chance Jesus was physically a man.
The traditional image of Jesus as a Caucasian is down to the Byzantines by the 6th Century, most depictions were a white man with a beard. In the preceding Centuries there wasn't a fixed image of Christ, and iconography for other deities was sometimes reworked or re-branded.
Turin Shroud shows a beard, and Eastern Mediterranean features, but who knows if it's authentic.
If there is a God, if Jesus was a Dude, if there's a Heaven etc, all things to thrash out when we die.
My own view is what awaits us is never ending darkness, but not in a hurry to find out.

God the Holy Spirit - surely God not only can be seen in ANY but EVERY form?

I think the time has come (in Western culture at least) to start embracing explorations of the 'divine feminine', and I mean that in relation to Christianity and not separate from it. This is far from 'news' or shocking in theological work of the last 30 years or so, but still a challenge to wider culture. Popular works such as Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" and Sue Monk Kidd's "The Secret Life of Bees" are part of the same explorations that Nicola Slee is doing as a poet and theologian.

God is not a man nor a woman! God is God, the creator of the heavens and the Earth - simple! Stop giving God human characteristics!

David Smithies 02 Nov 2011 19:13

To personify God as either "He" or "She" only serves to satisfy human ego or human insecurities.

All things bright and beautiful, all creatures great and small... Not just on this one tiny speck of dust called Planet Earth... Not merely this one Milky Way Galaxy... God is infinitely more than just a super image of humankind... God is without physical form and is omnipresent throughout the whole Universe. God is not seperate from creation but is the spiritual essence, an integral part of all that God creates.

Our Human species is not the supreme centre of the Universe. We are but the smallest part of something infinitely greater than ourselves.

God is a made up concept. So, if you like, you can rewrite the myths to make the offspring of "God" a woman if you like. Just in the same way that Christians have re-written older myths into the stories of moses, noah and jesus etc...

I love this film - i think it's so healthy to be challenged about our beliefs. I agree with this guy though, I do not think God could be a woman because I believe that the bible is true and so, therefore, is the way God represents himself in its pages. I believe he wants to reveal himself to all of us and so discussing it can only be a good thing!

S.Roberts 02 Nov 2011 20:12

I quite agree with most of what was said in today's broadcast, except the closing comment.
The vast majority of the western images I see of Jesus, in books, pictures, sculptures etc. in churches and Cathedrals depict Jesus with pale skin, blonde hair and blue eyes.
I feel quite sure this is not normal for someone born in this region. So, it may well be a nonsense attempting to modify the sex of Christ to suit modern times, it is also equally nonsense to modify his appearance to suit a desired Western appearance....

Nicola your kinship is not dependant upon Gods 'gender' your closeness to god is dependant upon your relationship to him in Christ with respect this is muddled thinking and simply doesn't stand up to any theologically sound scrutiny. You refer to yourself as a feminist first which I thought was interesting. I think you wish to view God through the lens of your own preferred idea of what you want Him to be. You also refer to yourself as a theologian and I do not wish to challenge that my question is do you believe in Jesus Christ as your Saviour? Too much theology can leave the heart cold.

Swampy 02 Nov 2011 20:01

Re the latest film: erm, Jesus WAS Asian! And you're the one wearing the dog collar!

Bricha 05 Nov 2011 20:16

To Ivan....and there are 6 billion people who do not share your beliefs. Are they all wrong or is it just the 1 billion christians who are wrong? You tell me. I would just love to see one tiny smidgen of proof that YOUR god exists.
