It comes down to consciousness and existential angst. The youth don't have a clear answer to the question: Who am I? Both religion and science have not yet provided satisfactory answers to the question. If the individuals in a society truly don't know who or what they are then why is it surprising that madness prevails?

Thieving cannot be justified by "it's the only way of getting these things". What about effort and hard work? I watched Benita in despair. The problem with this sort of liberalism is that there is no condemnation of the greed and blatant aggression shown by those she feels are misunderstood. I suggest the misunderstanding is all hers. What about those whose premises were burnt to the ground - have they decided to round up a crowd and go out pillaging? No, because they have some self respect and a sense of right and wrong. Shame on those who looted, there should be no excuses for their behaviour and shame on those who seek to find excuses for them.

I cannot believe that anyone thinks life is different now from "when it used to be" - life is what it is, taking things that don't belong to you is theft.

If you are unhappy with your life you should work towards changing your life - that may take some time, it may also be quite difficult to achieve - that does not excuse rioting because you are unhappy! Vote for change, vote for a difference, stop blaming other people!

Additionally - stop putting apologists for poor social behaviour on primetime tv!

The Government brought laws in that kids under 10 could not be named or shamed,parents were not allowed to chastise there kids so the kids did and do what they like, growing up doing what they like ie: causing mayhem so get rid of these stupid laws!!

Why did the riots happen? The riots are a manifestation of the society we live in which is no longer run for the benefit of the people who live in it. Everyone is a financial unit and everything has a financial bottom line. The social values which would and should have stopped rioters behaving in this way have been made obsolete by globalisation, financial 'efficiency' i.e highest profits, lowest wages and corrupt practices at every level.

When many of us were young there were not so many gangs,if not at all.I have noticed over the years that places where younger people use to play now have houses or something built on them.The council have GOBBLED up most of the playing places.Those children then go to other parts to parts to hang out or play and find they are on someone else patch,turf,manor,ends or HOOD and GANGS are formed very quickly.Councils answer to Government so if they care to look closer ,they'll find the answers are with them and them alone.Everything in this fishtank has been PUT in so you cant blame the fish.As they say 'you only get out what you put in.

Agree with Benita, often it's not children being intrinsically evil, it's the environment they are born into. It costs to help, but it costs more not to.

Basically, the youngsters of today hardly ever see a policeman except in the very occasional police car passing by. They need to realize that policemen are part of the community and are there to promote good behavior as well as take action against those who behave badly. The recent riots have proved that there is not a good enough police presence on our streets and economy by cutting their numbers is asking for trouble. When there is trouble more of the emergency services personnel are needed not make do with less.

well im 23 and I have no idea why you dont think this should happen. i am on the side of the story where i have no job and no prospects. i stayed good lernt the rules and good maners help others be a good freind. but that simply means you get walked on by all. if you no haw to monpulat something for your own needs i guess you would. but people get a tast for it if things have not gon there way. after all they tryed it your way you promised it would work but the system is failing all so. why not fight. we are young so we are looking out side the box looking at every mistake being made. money gradbers. selfish people. E-goes own this place. and the most simpal minded could not do any more harm. than what is being given out in mental torcher. and in job roll/school/cumunities. classes us as gullable. weak. infiarer. simply because i have no understanding of comunites or the system. because it was not a main subject at school. every teen finds out the hard way inless they have really smart parents. or rich.both would no about bissnuss & monipulasion.(there are to sides geting hurt of the young comunitie). so maybe they are joining together. you better hope the inbatweeners dont join in or hello world. it is not a main subject at school. that when your older if your poor you will get walked on if there learnings are floored and there morals are kind. there are not enought jobs out there. and only 10% of them mach any teachings. all are ruled by bissnuss. and bissnuss its self is run by all bulls. it seems to fail every where. we have no hope so what is the point in trying to fit in. if we are allready pushed out. i have not joined the crew but if a good spokes mon came my way i simply would join. yes most are jioning in because they can get free stuff. maybe they need/wont it becuase they cant aford it. or its because they can and its more fun than freaking out.
haw are they going to make adleast 120,000 for a house never mind having a life. or travel or figuer out haw to raise a kid or take on hobbies. all they have to look forword to instead is to start back stabing poeple to get ahead. threten people to get the resalt they need. take the piss out of the new staff. make jokes at others expece. try and keep on top of figuring out bills. taxses. contracts. debits. freinds. family. learning to get foot in the door. its easyer to fight or reble or give up. because every bodys to perocupided. in simpal tasks to keep there head at bay from the problems that have arrived. basic schooling does not teach you about bills, contracts. polatics, law, hot heads, theavies, money grabers, sales people, compolsive lyers. egoes. haw to rase a child. haw to get the job of your dreams with out blowing up a village full of peoples dreams. in the proses cartoons lye to the children teachings are worthless. when in real basic work spaces simply most have to do what they are tolded and exsept that because thats life humans have to show for them selfs. well we have a right to fight!!. because it is the only way that anyone gets heard. my sugestion is to scrap the school educasion system and start again because it is not comitited to real life events, recegers , and ethics. the only thing we have is are tvs cumputers lessons. and games. to keep are minds off all the hurt we have to deal with & do to each other. aldeast 10 must fail for 1 to thrive. its rong and everyone nos it. the only ones who dont cair are . the gullable. the fisicly strong both mind and body. and the poor because we are already screwd. or working people because they have there minds ocupied by simpal tasks. but give us an opertunite to change it and we will do what we have to. change are out look. but we both no this is not the answer needed but it is the only one they have time to figuer out. inless help is given with out excuesses or resoning. just a repectfull acsion. i have no idea what comuniet guide lens are. or what the terms and condisions are. i cant read 50 pages to send my apnion.

Sorry but there are no differences between the young of today and those of 50 years ago and they certainly are not a generation with mental health problems. Greed, selfishness and an arrogant disregard for authority has been the hallmark of youth for decades the big difference nowadays is we do not punish them. What we do is generate lots of apologists and molly coddle them with organisations such as yours.

yes we must intervene at the youngest possible age with children, they should be taught right from wrong early even before they go to school,. Mothers should be with their children as long as possible. Society should not insist on mothers going to work, and children being looked after by someone else. if mothers can't aford to stay with their children the state must help more positively even finacially. Why have children and get someone else to look after them. Who would buy a car so someone else would drive it!

Sorry but this just reeks of what has made the justice system toothless. "He was disadvantaged", "She came from a broken home". Tough - so did lots of people, including me. Do the crime, you do the time. Back in the '60's and '70's, excuses didn't come into it. It was a fine, probation, or a spell in Haslar (if you didn't pay your fine or meet your probation conditions, that also led to Haslar). It was like boot-camp - definitely NOT a soft option - 12 weeks hard graft. I don't know anybody who went back for a second dose, or on to prison. Unshackle the courts - a short sharp dose of justice also sends a message to others that there are limits to what the state will tolerate.
